A Roof Built to Handle Scotland’s Wild West Coast

At Kishorn, the wind never really stops. So, when Bakkafrost Scotland began building its new fish processing factory there, they knew they needed a roofing contractor who could take on Scotland’s toughest weather conditions and deliver lasting results.

Remote, exposed, and breathtaking in equal measure, Kishorn demands a special kind of preparation – and a team willing to work with, not against, the elements. As one of the Highlands’ leading roofing specialists, this was exactly the kind of project we were built for.

Designing a Roof to Last

Our job was to deliver a roof that was solid, watertight, and built to last, supporting one of Scotland’s most important industries. The system was designed using high-performance single ply roofing materials that would be able to stand up to decades of coastal weather.

This included:

  • A steel deck base
  • 9,000m² of Powerdeck F insulation to keep the building warm and energy-efficient
  • 9,500m² of Alwitra membrane for strong, watertight protection
  • Solar Fix bars, walkway mats and handrails to make future access safe and simple

Altogether, the roof spanned almost 10,000 square metres – which, for context, is about four Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Working Through Scotland’s Toughest Weather

The weather in Scotland rarely makes things easy, and Kishorn was no exception. Strong winds and freezing temperatures often brought work to a standstill. But when that happened, our team took a pause, before picking things up again as soon as it was safe – ensuring quality was never rushed or compromised.

Elsewhere on site, material storage was also proving a challenge. Therefore, we worked closely with the Port of Kishorn to secure covered warehouse space nearby, keeping insulation and roofing materials dry and ready whenever the weather allowed. This approach kept waste low, safeguarded quality, and helped us stay on track.

The Team Behind the Project

Delivering an industrial roofing project of this scale takes more than materials and machinery – it takes people who care about doing things right.

We worked closely with ICB, suppliers of the Alwitra single ply roofing system, whose technical team visited regularly to check progress and support our installers – including several newer team members who gained valuable hands-on experience along the way.

Everyone played a part, from planning and logistics to the final welded seam, and it was this teamwork, skill, and problem-solving that made the project a success.

The Result: A Roof Built to Last

It wasn’t an easy job – high winds, freezing days and the constant uncertainty of west coast weather tested everyone involved. But through it all, we delivered on time, on budget, and to specification, and today, the roof protects one of the most important parts of Scotland’s food industry –  and will continue to do so for decades to come.

For us, Kishorn Fish Processing Factory is more than a project. It’s proof that with careful planning, skilled hands, and a bit of Highland determination, there’s not much we can’t handle.
